Latch Assembly and Valvetrain Comprising Same - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18262153 titled 'Latch Assembly and Valvetrain Comprising Same

Simplified Explanation

The latch assembly and valvetrain described in the patent application involve a stationary housing with a plunger cavity, a plunger, and a controllable upper latch member. The plunger has a control end, a plunger body, a spigot body, and a spigot end. The controllable upper latch member can lock or unlock the plunger to slide in the plunger cavity along a first axis. A slidable transverse latch member or rotatable upper castellation body can act as the controllable upper latch member. The housing for the latch assembly is stationary, even though the valve bridge and rocker arm are movable.

  • Stationary housing with plunger cavity
  • Plunger with control end, plunger body, spigot body, and spigot end
  • Controllable upper latch member for locking/unlocking the plunger
  • Slidable transverse latch member or rotatable upper castellation body
  • Stationary housing for latch assembly

Potential Applications

The technology described in the patent application could be used in automotive engines, industrial machinery, and other mechanical systems where precise control over valve timing is required.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of ensuring accurate and reliable operation of the valvetrain in an engine or machinery by providing a mechanism to lock and unlock the plunger as needed.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include improved engine performance, increased efficiency, and reduced wear and tear on engine components due to precise control over valve timing.

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology could be commercially applied in the automotive industry, manufacturing sector, and any other industry that relies on internal combustion engines or mechanical systems with valvetrains.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be existing latch assemblies and valvetrains used in engines and machinery, although the specific design and features described in the patent application may be novel and innovative.

Unanswered Questions

== How does the controllable upper latch member switch between locking and unlocking the plunger? The patent application does not provide detailed information on the specific mechanism or method used by the controllable upper latch member to switch between locking and unlocking the plunger. Further clarification on this aspect would be beneficial.

== What materials are used in the construction of the plunger and housing? The patent application does not specify the materials used in the construction of the plunger and housing. Understanding the materials used can provide insights into the durability and performance of the latch assembly and valvetrain.

Original Abstract Submitted

A latch assembly and valvetrain therewith can comprise a stationary housing comprising a plunger cavity, a plunger in the plunger cavity, and a controllable upper latch member. The plunger can comprise a control end, a plunger body, a spigot body and a spigot end. The controllable upper latch member can be configured to selectively act on the control end and can be configured to switch between locking the plunger from moving along a first axis and unlocking the plunger to slide in the plunger cavity along the first axis. A slidable transverse latch member or rotatable upper castellation body can act as the controllable upper latch member. While a valve bridge and rocker arm can be movable, the housing for the latch assembly can be stationary.
