DISPLAY APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18239903 titled 'DISPLAY APPARATUS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a display apparatus with a foldable area and non-foldable areas, covered by a protective layer with a soft layer and a hard layer.

  • The display panel includes a foldable area, a first non-foldable area, and a second non-foldable area.
  • A cover window is placed on the display panel.
  • The protective layer consists of a soft layer with a first material and a hard layer with a second material of higher Young's modulus.
  • The soft layer has a hard pattern over the non-foldable areas, while the hard pattern is absent over the foldable area.

Potential Applications

The technology could be applied in:

  • Foldable electronic devices
  • Protective covers for displays

Problems Solved

This technology addresses:

  • Protecting foldable displays from damage
  • Enhancing durability of foldable devices

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include:

  • Improved longevity of foldable displays
  • Enhanced protection against scratches and impacts

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology could be commercially applied in:

  • Foldable smartphones and tablets
  • Protective accessories for electronic devices

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of flexible protective layers on displays to prevent damage.

Unanswered Questions

How does the hard pattern on the soft layer enhance the durability of the display?

The hard pattern may distribute impact forces more evenly, reducing the risk of damage to the display.

Are there any limitations to the materials used in the protective layer?

Certain materials may have limitations in terms of flexibility or transparency, which could affect the overall performance of the protective layer.

Original Abstract Submitted

A display apparatus includes a display panel including a foldable area, and a first non-foldable area and a second non-foldable area, a cover window disposed on the display panel, and a protective layer including a soft layer and a hard layer. The soft layer is on the cover window and includes a first material, and the hard layer is on the soft layer and includes a second material having a Young's modulus greater than a Young's modulus of the first material, where the soft layer includes a hard pattern in a portion overlapping the first non-foldable area and the second non-foldable area, and the hard pattern is not in a portion overlapping the foldable area.
