DEVICE AND METHOD TO CALIBRATE PARALLAX OPTICAL ELEMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18239611 titled 'DEVICE AND METHOD TO CALIBRATE PARALLAX OPTICAL ELEMENT

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an electronic device with a display that can output an image. It includes a parallax optical element that provides light corresponding to the image to multiple viewpoints. The device also has an input interface for calibration by a user who observes a pattern image from a reference viewpoint. A processor adjusts parameters of the parallax optical element based on the user's input and outputs the adjusted pattern image.

  • The electronic device has a display that can output images.
  • A parallax optical element is used to provide light corresponding to the image to multiple viewpoints.
  • Users can calibrate the parallax optical element by observing a pattern image from a reference viewpoint.
  • The processor adjusts parameters of the parallax optical element based on the user's input.
  • The adjusted pattern image is then outputted by the display.

Potential Applications

  • 3D displays: The technology can be used to create 3D displays that provide a realistic viewing experience from multiple viewpoints.
  • Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR): The calibrated parallax optical element can enhance the immersive experience in VR and AR applications by providing accurate depth perception from different angles.
  • Gaming: The technology can be applied to gaming devices to create more realistic and immersive gameplay.

Problems Solved

  • Limited viewing angles: The parallax optical element allows for a wider range of viewpoints, addressing the issue of limited viewing angles in traditional displays.
  • Inaccurate depth perception: By calibrating the parallax optical element, the technology improves the accuracy of depth perception, providing a more realistic visual experience.

Benefits

  • Enhanced user experience: The calibrated parallax optical element provides a more immersive and realistic viewing experience, particularly in 3D displays, VR, AR, and gaming applications.
  • Improved depth perception: By adjusting the parameters of the parallax optical element, the technology improves the accuracy of depth perception, leading to more realistic visuals.
  • Customizable calibration: Users can calibrate the parallax optical element according to their specific viewing preferences, allowing for a personalized visual experience.

Original Abstract Submitted

Provided is an electronic device including a display to output an image, a parallax optical element configured to provide light corresponding to the image to a plurality of viewpoints, an input interface configured to receive an input to calibrate the parallax optical element by a user who observes a pattern image from a reference viewpoint among the plurality of viewpoints, and a processor configured to output the pattern image generated by rendering a calibration pattern toward the reference viewpoint, adjust at least one of a pitch parameter, a slanted angle parameter, and a position offset parameter of the parallax optical element based on the input, and output, by the display, the pattern image adjusted by re-rendering the calibration pattern based on an adjusted parameter.
