TECHNIQUES FOR RECEIVING FRAMES WITH SECURELY SCRAMBLED PAYLOAD - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18231704 titled 'TECHNIQUES FOR RECEIVING FRAMES WITH SECURELY SCRAMBLED PAYLOAD

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a technique for secure scrambling in communication devices. The method involves receiving a data frame from another device and determining its frame type based on a preamble. The device then applies a frame type-based key and a service field value to descramble the frame's MAC header. The payload is descrambled by de-obfuscating the MAC header. The device also selects a scrambler seed for scrambling an ACK message and scrambles the message based on the selected seed.

  • The technique involves receiving and descrambling data frames in communication devices.
  • The frame type is determined based on the preamble of the frame.
  • A frame type-based key and service field value are used to implement the descrambling process for the MAC header.
  • The payload is descrambled by de-obfuscating the MAC header.
  • The technique also includes selecting a scrambler seed for scrambling ACK messages.
  • The ACK message is scrambled based on the selected seed.

Potential Applications:

  • Secure communication between devices
  • Wireless communication protocols
  • Data transmission in networks

Problems Solved:

  • Ensuring secure scrambling of data frames
  • Preventing unauthorized access to transmitted data
  • Protecting the integrity of communication protocols

Benefits:

  • Enhanced security in communication devices
  • Improved privacy and confidentiality of transmitted data
  • Efficient and reliable data transmission

Original Abstract Submitted

Techniques are directed toward secure scrambling. An example method includes receiving, by a first communication device a physical layer protocol data unit (PPDU) frame from a second communication device. The first communication device can determine a PPDU frame type based at least in part on a preamble of the PPDU frame. The first communication device can apply a PPDU frame type-based key and a determined service field value to implement a descrambling process for a medium access control (MAC) header of the PPDU frame. The first communication device can descramble a payload based at least in part on de-obfuscating the MAC header. The first communication device selecting a scrambler seed for scrambling an acknowledgement (ACK) message. The first communication device scrambling the ACK message based on the selected scrambler seed.
