ELECTRONIC DEVICE INCLUDING FLEXIBLE DISPLAY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18229434 titled 'ELECTRONIC DEVICE INCLUDING FLEXIBLE DISPLAY

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an electronic device with a foldable design and a flexible display. The device consists of two housings connected by a hinge, allowing them to be folded relative to each other. The flexible display is supported by both housings and includes a window layer and a display panel. A bending part is bent from the display panel to the rear surface of the flexible display at one edge. A filling member surrounds at least a part of the bending part and the edge, but is not located between the window layer and the display panel.

  • The electronic device has a foldable design with a hinge, allowing for easy portability and compact storage.
  • The flexible display enables a versatile user experience, as it can be bent and adjusted according to the user's needs.
  • The window layer protects the display panel and enhances the visual quality of the device.
  • The bending part adds flexibility to the display, allowing it to be folded without damaging the screen.
  • The filling member provides support and protection to the bending part and the edge of the flexible display.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Mobile phones and tablets with foldable screens, offering larger display sizes without compromising portability.
  • E-book readers with flexible displays that can be folded like a traditional book for easier handling and storage.
  • Wearable devices, such as smartwatches or fitness trackers, with flexible displays that can conform to the shape of the user's wrist.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Limited screen size in portable devices can be overcome by using a foldable design with a flexible display.
  • Fragility of traditional rigid displays is addressed by the bending part and filling member, providing durability and protection.
  • Space constraints in compact devices are alleviated by the foldable design, allowing for larger displays when unfolded.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced portability and convenience due to the foldable design, making the device more compact for transportation and storage.
  • Improved user experience with a larger display area when unfolded, offering more immersive content consumption and multitasking capabilities.
  • Increased durability and resistance to damage, as the flexible display and filling member provide protection against impacts and bending.

Original Abstract Submitted

An electronic device includes: a first housing; a second housing; a hinge device connecting the first housing and the second housing to be foldable relative to each other; and a flexible display supported by the first housing and the second housing, wherein the flexible display may include: a window layer; a display panel laminated under the window layer; a bending part bent from the display panel to a rear surface of the flexible display at a first edge of the flexible display; and a first filling member in a first space, within the electronic device, such as to surround at least a part of the first edge together with the bending part, wherein the first filling member is not within a second space between the window layer and the display panel.
