METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR GENERATING INDEXING METADATA FOR OBJECT LEVEL RESTORATION OF LIMITED ACCESS CLOUD DATA - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17972333 titled 'METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR GENERATING INDEXING METADATA FOR OBJECT LEVEL RESTORATION OF LIMITED ACCESS CLOUD DATA

Simplified Explanation

The method described in the abstract is a technique for performing data protection services for limited access cloud data. It involves identifying backup generation events associated with virtual machines, obtaining VM information, instantiating a VM agent, obtaining metadata files, obtaining VM data from limited access cloud data, storing the data in a backup storage, generating indexing metadata, and providing the indexing metadata to a data manager.

  • Identification of backup generation events associated with virtual machines
  • Obtaining VM information and instantiating a VM agent within the VM
  • Obtaining metadata files and VM data from limited access cloud data
  • Storing VM data and metadata in a backup storage to generate a backup
  • Generating indexing metadata associated with the backup
  • Providing the indexing metadata to a data manager

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in cloud computing, data protection services, and virtual machine management.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of efficiently backing up and protecting data in limited access cloud environments.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include improved data protection, efficient backup generation, and enhanced data management in cloud environments.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications of this technology include cloud service providers, data protection companies, and businesses utilizing cloud storage services.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be traditional backup methods for virtual machines in cloud environments.

Unanswered Questions

1. How does this method handle security and access control for the backup data? 2. Are there any limitations to the size or type of virtual machines that can be backed up using this method?

Original Abstract Submitted

Techniques described herein relate to a method for performing data protection services for limited access cloud data. The method includes identifying, by a cloud service provider (CSP) proxy, a backup generation event associated with a virtual machine (VM); in response to identifying the backup generation event: obtaining VM information associated with the VM; instantiating a VM agent within the VM; obtaining a metadata file from the VM agent; obtaining VM data from limited access cloud data; storing the VM data and a copy of the metadata file in a backup storage to generate a backup of the VM; generating indexing metadata associated with the backup using the metadata file; and providing the indexing metadata to a data manager.
