EFFICIENT PATH STATE REPORTING FOR UNIFORM HOST ATTACHMENT CONFIGURATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17949807 titled 'EFFICIENT PATH STATE REPORTING FOR UNIFORM HOST ATTACHMENT CONFIGURATION
Simplified Explanation
The abstract describes a method for configuring host access to a logical device on a system, allowing the device to be exposed to the host over a specific path. The system can update its configuration information to include a fully populated uniform host configuration for the host with respect to the device, even before the host access is established. This allows the system to report information to the host regarding the path state information, and the host can query the system for up-to-date information on the path state.
- Explanation of the patent/innovation:
* Configuring host access to a logical device on a system * Updating configuration information to include a fully populated uniform host configuration * Reporting path state information to the host * Allowing the host to query the system for up-to-date information
Potential Applications
This technology could be applied in network systems, storage systems, and data centers to streamline the configuration and management of host access to logical devices.
Problems Solved
1. Simplifying the process of configuring host access to logical devices 2. Providing up-to-date information on path state to hosts
Benefits
1. Improved efficiency in managing host access configurations 2. Enhanced communication between systems and hosts 3. Increased reliability in reporting path state information
Potential Commercial Applications
Optimizing data center operations with efficient host access configurations
Possible Prior Art
There may be prior art related to configuring host access to devices in network systems or storage environments, but specific examples are not provided in the abstract.
Unanswered Questions
How does this technology impact system security?
This article does not address the potential security implications of sharing path state information with hosts.
What are the scalability limitations of this method?
The abstract does not mention any potential limitations in scaling this method for larger systems or networks.
Original Abstract Submitted
Host access to a system DS can be configured for a logical device L so that L is exposed to the host over path P from DS. Prior to configuring host access to L on another system DS, configuration information of DS can be updated to include a fully populated uniform host configuration for the host with respect to L. The fully populated uniform host configuration can identify P as well as path P between DS and the host. Even though P may not be established so that L is not yet exposed to the host over P, DS can use the information included in the fully populated uniform host configuration to report information to the host regarding path state information for P and P. The host can directly query DS regarding P in order to determine current up-to-date information regarding the path state of P with respect to L
