TECHNIQUES FOR CONFIGURING PHYSICAL LAYER SIGNATURE FEEDBACK IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17945315 titled 'TECHNIQUES FOR CONFIGURING PHYSICAL LAYER SIGNATURE FEEDBACK IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods, systems, and devices for enhancing security in wireless communications through physical layer signature feedback. Here are the key points:

  • User equipment (UE) and a network entity can apply a physical layer signature, like an artificial physical layer impairment, to physical layer signals for identification purposes.
  • Upon receiving a physical layer signal, the UE checks if the signal includes a valid physical layer signature. If a match is found, the UE operates as usual. If not, the UE notifies the network entity of the mismatch.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various industries such as telecommunications, IoT devices, and smart home systems to enhance security in wireless communications.

Problems Solved

1. Unauthorized access to wireless communications. 2. Ensuring the integrity of transmitted signals.

Benefits

1. Improved security in wireless communications. 2. Enhanced protection against signal tampering. 3. Efficient identification of valid physical layer signatures.

Potential Commercial Applications

Enhancing security in 5G networks for telecommunications companies.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of encryption techniques to secure wireless communications, but the specific method of applying physical layer signatures for security purposes may be unique to this patent application.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology impact battery life in wireless devices?

The patent application does not address the potential impact of implementing physical layer signatures on the battery life of wireless devices. This could be an important consideration for practical applications of the technology.

What are the potential regulatory implications of using physical layer signatures in wireless communications?

The patent application does not discuss any regulatory considerations or compliance requirements that may arise from implementing physical layer signatures in wireless communications. Understanding the regulatory landscape could be crucial for widespread adoption of this technology.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described for physical layer signature feedback to enhance security in wireless communications. A user equipment (UE) and a network entity may apply a physical layer signature, such as an artificial physical layer impairment, to one or more physical layer signals that may be measured to identify a physical layer signature of the associated physical layer signal. The UE, upon receipt of a physical layer signal, may check if the identified signal includes a physical layer signature of a set of valid physical layer signatures. If the received physical layer signature matches a valid physical layer signature, the UE may operate in accordance with procedures associated with the signal. If the received physical layer signature does not match a valid physical layer signature, the UE may transmit a message to the network entity that indicates an unmatched physical layer signature.
