METHOD AND DEVICE FOR DETECTING SEAT BELT OF VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17894717 titled 'METHOD AND DEVICE FOR DETECTING SEAT BELT OF VEHICLE

Simplified Explanation

The disclosed patent application describes a method for detecting whether a seat belt is being worn in a vehicle using a vision sensor. Here are the key points:

  • The method involves storing patterns of the seat belt webbing before and after it is worn by an occupant of the vehicle.
  • An image of the seat belt webbing is captured by a vision sensor in a specific region of interest.
  • The controller then compares the captured image with the stored patterns to determine if the seat belt is detected.
  • If the seat belt pattern is not detected, a warning message is displayed on a display device to indicate that the seat belt is not being worn.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Automotive industry: This method can be implemented in vehicles to ensure that seat belts are being worn by occupants, promoting safety.
  • Fleet management: Companies that manage a fleet of vehicles can use this technology to monitor seat belt usage and enforce safety protocols.
  • Insurance industry: Insurance companies can use this method to incentivize safe driving behavior by offering discounts to policyholders who consistently wear their seat belts.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Non-compliance with seat belt usage: This technology helps address the issue of drivers or passengers not wearing seat belts, which can lead to increased risk of injury or fatality in the event of an accident.
  • Monitoring seat belt usage: It provides a reliable and automated way to monitor seat belt usage in vehicles, eliminating the need for manual checks or relying on self-reporting.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved safety: By detecting whether seat belts are being worn, this technology promotes safer driving habits and reduces the risk of injuries in accidents.
  • Automated monitoring: The method eliminates the need for manual checks, making it more efficient and reliable for monitoring seat belt usage.
  • Real-time warnings: The display device can provide immediate feedback to the driver or occupants, reminding them to wear their seat belts and promoting compliance.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed is a method of detecting a seat belt of a vehicle, the method comprising: storing, by a controller, a pattern before an occupant of a vehicle wears a seat belt webbing and a pattern after the occupant of the vehicle wears the seat belt webbing photographed through a region of interest of a vision sensor in a memory; receiving, by the controller, an image for the seat belt webbing photographed in the region of interest of the vision sensor; determining, by the controller, whether the pattern of the seat belt webbing stored in the memory is detected from the image of the seat belt webbing; and when the pattern of the seat belt webbing is not detected, controlling, by the controller, a display device to display a first warning message indicating that the seat belt webbing is not detected.
