APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING FINGERPRINT RECOGNITION AND PHOTOGRAPHING BASED ON UNDER DISPLAY CAMERA IN ELECTRONIC DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17875663 titled 'APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING FINGERPRINT RECOGNITION AND PHOTOGRAPHING BASED ON UNDER DISPLAY CAMERA IN ELECTRONIC DEVICE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an electronic device with a display module, a UDC (Under Display Camera) module, and a processor. The processor can identify the operation mode of the UDC module and make certain adjustments accordingly.

  • The processor can change the transmittance of a specific area on the display when the UDC module is in a designated operation mode.
  • In the first designated operation mode, the processor configures the UDC module to face the sensor module and captures a first image based on the light transferred to the sensor module.
  • In the second designated operation mode, the processor configures the UDC module to face the camera module and captures a second image based on the light transferred to the camera module through a second path.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Smartphones and tablets with under-display cameras that can switch between capturing images through the display area or the camera module.
  • Devices with enhanced privacy features, where the UDC area can be made opaque to prevent the camera from capturing images.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • The technology allows for a seamless integration of a camera module under the display, eliminating the need for a visible camera notch or bezel.
  • It provides flexibility in capturing images either through the display area or the camera module, depending on the desired operation mode.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced aesthetics by eliminating the need for a visible camera notch or bezel.
  • Improved privacy by allowing the user to control the visibility of the camera module.
  • Increased display area utilization by integrating the camera module under the display.

Original Abstract Submitted

The electronic device according to an embodiment may include a display module, a UDC module, and a processor. The processor may operate to identify an operation mode of the UDC module. The processor may operate to change, when the operation mode is a first designated operation mode, transmittance of a UDC area in a display area of the display module, control the UDC module to configure a first path facing the sensor module, and obtain a first image based on light transferred to the sensor module. The processor may operate to change, when the operation mode is a second designated operation mode, the transmittance of the UDC area, control the UDC module to configure a second path facing the camera module, and obtain a second image based on light transferred to the camera module through the second path.
