APPARATUS FOR ACCELERATING SIMULTANEOUS LOCALIZATION AND MAPPING AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE INCLUDING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17868453 titled 'APPARATUS FOR ACCELERATING SIMULTANEOUS LOCALIZATION AND MAPPING AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE INCLUDING THE SAME

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an apparatus for accelerating simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) using a SLAM processor with a front-end processor and a back-end processor. The front-end processor tracks the position of a feature in a second frame based on its position in a first frame, while the back-end processor obtains measurements and computes elements for optimization.

  • The apparatus is designed to accelerate simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) processes.
  • It includes a front-end processor that tracks the position of a feature in a second frame based on its position in a first frame.
  • A back-end processor obtains measurements and computes elements for optimization.
  • The optimization matrix is used to perform optimization operations on the map point and camera pose states.

Potential Applications

  • Robotics: This technology can be applied in robotics for real-time mapping and localization, enabling robots to navigate and interact with their environment.
  • Augmented Reality: The SLAM processor can be used in augmented reality applications to accurately track the position of virtual objects in real-time.
  • Autonomous Vehicles: SLAM is crucial for autonomous vehicles to create accurate maps of their surroundings and localize themselves within those maps.

Problems Solved

  • Real-time Mapping: The apparatus provides a solution for real-time mapping by efficiently tracking features and optimizing map point and camera pose states.
  • Localization: Simultaneous localization and mapping is essential for accurately localizing objects or devices in an unknown environment.
  • Optimization: The back-end processor's ability to compute elements for optimization helps improve the accuracy and efficiency of the SLAM process.

Benefits

  • Faster SLAM: The apparatus accelerates the SLAM process by efficiently tracking features and performing optimization operations.
  • Accurate Mapping: By accurately tracking features and optimizing map point and camera pose states, the apparatus improves the accuracy of the generated maps.
  • Real-time Localization: The SLAM processor enables real-time localization, making it suitable for applications that require instant positioning and mapping.

Original Abstract Submitted

An apparatus for accelerating simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) includes a SLAM processor including a front-end processor and a back-end processor. The front-end processor is configured to track a position of a first feature, among features extracted from a first frame, in a second frame subsequent to the first frame, and the back-end processor is configured to obtain a first measurement regarding a map point and a camera pose of the first feature based on the position of the first feature in the second frame tracked by the front-end processor, compute elements affecting an optimization matrix in relation to the first measurement, among elements of a Hessian matrix regarding the map point and the camera pose, and accumulate the computed elements in the optimization matrix used to perform an optimization operation with respect to states of the map point and the camera pose.
