METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR REGISTERING DIGITAL DOCUMENTS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240037284 titled 'METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR REGISTERING DIGITAL DOCUMENTS

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for registering and updating a digitally stored and versioned document in a digital document register. The method involves storing a public ownership key, a document hash value, and a document signature for each version of the document.

Explanation of the patent/innovation:

  • The method starts by providing a first version of the document, which is defined in a document description language and has a defined rendered graphic representation.
  • The first version is then registered in the document register.
  • A second version of the document is created by adding a reversibly added part to the first version. The second version includes a second set of metadata.
  • The second version is registered in the document register, with the second metadata embedded in the version without affecting the graphic representation.
  • At least a part of the reversibly added part can be unambiguously generated based on the second metadata.
  • The registering of the second version involves storing a hash of the second metadata.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Document version control: This method can be used to efficiently manage and track different versions of a document, ensuring that each version is securely stored and easily identifiable.
  • Intellectual property protection: The method can be applied to protect digital documents, such as patents, by securely registering and updating their versions, ensuring their integrity and authenticity.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Document integrity: The method ensures that the document versions are securely stored and their integrity is maintained by storing a hash of the metadata.
  • Efficient version control: The method provides an efficient way to register and update document versions without affecting the graphic representation, making it easier to track and manage changes.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved document management: The method simplifies the process of registering and updating document versions, making it easier to track and manage changes over time.
  • Enhanced document security: By storing a hash of the metadata, the method ensures the integrity and authenticity of the document versions, providing a secure way to protect digital documents.
  • Efficient version control: The method allows for the addition of metadata without affecting the graphic representation, making it easier to track and manage different versions of a document.

Original Abstract Submitted

method for registering and updating an electronically stored and versioned alpha digital document (a) in a digital document register by storing, for each version, not the document but a public ownership key; a digital document hash value; and a digital document signature. the invention is characterised by the steps a) providing a first document version, defined in a document description language to have a defined rendered graphic representation; b) registering said first version; c) providing a second document version by adding a reversibly added part to said first document version, said second version comprising a second set of metadata; and d) registering said second version, in that said second metadata is embedded in the second version without affecting said graphic representation, in that at least a part of the reversibly added part can be unambiguously generated based on the second metadata, and in that the registering in step d comprises storing a hash of the second metadata. the invention also relates to a system.
