SELF-SETTING PLUG - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18672622 titled 'SELF-SETTING PLUG
The abstract of this patent application describes a plug for wellbore tubing that includes an internal portion, a first external portion surrounding the internal portion, and a second external portion adjacent to the first external portion along the central longitudinal axis of the plug. The second external portion expands to engage the interior surface of the wellbore tubing in response to a trigger as the plug moves downhole, opening a passage for fluid to flow to the first external portion. The first external portion then expands to engage the wellbore tubing upon contact with the fluid.
- The plug for wellbore tubing has an internal portion, a first external portion, and a second external portion.
- The second external portion expands to engage the interior surface of the wellbore tubing in response to a trigger.
- This expansion opens a passage for fluid to flow to the first external portion.
- The first external portion then expands to engage the wellbore tubing upon contact with the fluid.
- This design allows for effective sealing and control of fluid flow in wellbore tubing.
Potential Applications: - Oil and gas drilling operations - Well completion and production processes - Geothermal energy extraction
Problems Solved: - Ensures effective sealing in wellbore tubing - Controls fluid flow in downhole operations - Improves overall efficiency and safety in drilling processes
Benefits: - Enhanced wellbore integrity - Increased control over fluid flow - Reduced risk of leaks and spills
Commercial Applications: Title: Innovative Plug for Wellbore Tubing in Oil and Gas Drilling This technology can be used in various oil and gas drilling operations, well completion processes, and geothermal energy extraction projects. It offers improved sealing and control of fluid flow, enhancing overall efficiency and safety in downhole operations.
Questions about Plug for Wellbore Tubing: 1. How does the plug's design contribute to improved sealing in wellbore tubing? 2. What are the potential applications of this technology beyond oil and gas drilling operations?
Original Abstract Submitted
A plug for wellbore tubing includes: an internal portion; a first external portion which surrounds the internal portion; and a second external portion disposed axially adjacent to the first external portion, with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the plug. The second external portion expands to: engage an interior surface of the wellbore tubing in response to a trigger as the plug displaces downhole through the wellbore tubing; and open a passage to permit a fluid to progress to the first external portion. The first external portion expands to engage the wellbore tubing in response to the expansion of the second external portion and upon contact with the fluid. A related method includes providing such a plug, and displacing the plug downhole in the wellbore tubing.
