CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT FOR VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18238742 titled 'CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT FOR VEHICLE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a constant velocity joint for a vehicle, which is responsible for transmitting power from a shaft to the axle housing. The joint includes an axle housing fixed to a knuckle by a hub bearing, and a joint assembly with multiple joint balls.

  • The axle housing has an extension portion that extends from the end of the housing in a radial direction.
  • The extension portion applies a pressing force to the inner race of the hub bearing in the axial direction of the axle housing.
  • A boot surrounds the outer side of the extension portion and is connected to it, creating a restraining force between the extension portion and the boot in the axial direction.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Automotive industry: This constant velocity joint can be used in various vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs.
  • Industrial machinery: The joint can also be applied in machinery that requires smooth power transmission, such as construction equipment or agricultural machinery.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Improved power transmission: The constant velocity joint ensures efficient and reliable power transfer from the shaft to the axle housing, reducing energy loss and enhancing overall performance.
  • Enhanced durability: The design of the joint, with the extension portion and boot, helps protect the inner components from external elements, increasing the lifespan of the joint.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Increased efficiency: The constant velocity joint allows for a constant velocity of the rotating shaft, resulting in smoother operation and improved fuel efficiency.
  • Extended lifespan: The protective boot and the pressing force applied by the extension portion help prevent damage and wear, leading to a longer lifespan of the joint.
  • Enhanced reliability: By providing a secure connection between the axle housing and the hub bearing, the joint ensures reliable power transmission, reducing the risk of failures or breakdowns.

Original Abstract Submitted

A constant velocity joint for a vehicle. The constant velocity joint includes: an axle housing fixed to a knuckle by a hub bearing, and a joint assembly inserted into the axle housing to transmit power from a shaft to the axle housing through a plurality of joint balls. In particular, the axle housing includes an extension portion which is extended from an end portion of the axle housing in a radial direction of the axle housing, and the extension portion provides a pressing force to an inner race of the hub bearing in an axial direction of the axle housing. The constant velocity joint further includes a boot surrounding an outer side of the extension portion and coupled to the extension portion so as to form a restraining force between the extension portion and the boot in the axial direction.
