METHOD AND APPARATUS WITH IMAGE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18333920 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS WITH IMAGE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a device with image acquisition that includes a display layer, phase masks, an image sensor, and a processor for image processing.

  • The device has a first phase mask at the front end of the display layer, which modulates external light.
  • The display layer has pixel areas and hole areas, allowing the modulated light to pass through.
  • A second phase mask is located at the rear end of the display layer, further modulating the light.
  • An image sensor is positioned at the rear end of the second phase mask, capturing the modulated light and generating a raw image.
  • The processor performs image processing on the raw image using blur information corresponding to the image.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Improved image acquisition in devices such as cameras, smartphones, or tablets.
  • Enhanced image quality and clarity in low-light conditions or situations with motion blur.
  • Advanced image processing capabilities for various applications, including photography, video recording, and computer vision.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Overcoming limitations of traditional image acquisition methods by using phase masks to modulate light.
  • Addressing issues of image blur and low-quality images in challenging lighting conditions.
  • Providing a solution for capturing and processing high-quality images in real-time.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved image quality and sharpness in various lighting conditions.
  • Enhanced performance in low-light environments, reducing the need for additional lighting.
  • Real-time image processing capabilities, allowing for immediate adjustments and improvements to captured images.

Original Abstract Submitted

A device with image acquisition includes: a first phase mask disposed at a front end of a display layer and configured to modulate external light; the display layer comprising pixel areas between hole areas through which the modulated light that has passed through the first phase mask passes; a second phase mask disposed at a rear end of the display layer and configured to modulate the modulated light that has passed through the first phase mask; an image sensor disposed at a rear end of the second phase mask and configured to generate a raw image by sensing the modulated light that has passed through the second phase mask; and a processor configured to perform image processing on the raw image, based on blur information corresponding to the raw image.
